In this week s edition of Gone Fishing choosing the right rod for jigging with fireline Hi and welcome to Gone Fishing I m Greg Schoneck Last week we talked about jigging rods and the fast action you need for a good jigging rod There is an exception to the rule It s fireline Because fireline has no stretch that fast action that stiffer rod is going to give you trouble You re going to miss a lot of fish You re going to be too fast with fireline we want to slow things down so I go to a medium action rod when I m using fireline With fireline there is no stretch in the line so you need to gain some shock absorbency from the rod If you re using a fast action rod like you might use with monofilament the bend is way up here in the upper 1 4 With fireline you want it way down here in the upper 1 3 That s going to give you a lot more flex that you need with fireline You can see the bend of the rod here that s why with this bend and the fish pulling like that that s where you get shock absorbing when you re using fireline That s why that s so important A light drag and a nice medium action rod That ll really help All right a catfish Can you believe that What you can t catch jigging Let s see if we can get him in here Can you believe what you can catch with a jig You know keep in mind these medium action rods they are going to be a lot better if you re using fireline Don t forget June 2 and 3 is free fishing weekend you don t need a liscense Does it get better than that Until next time I m Greg Schoneck and I m Gone Fishing
